Why did you pick your college major? How did that help lead (or not) to where you are now? I grew up on a horse farm where I became comfortable solving physical problems and working with my hands. In middle school, my math teacher mentioned a career in engineering to me. This idea stuck with me through high school where I continued to succeed in and enjoy the maths and sciences and heard very good things about a career in the field. From there based on my background and interests, mechanical was a logical discipline choice.
How have your career aspirations changed over the years? When I was in college, my answer to "what's your dream job" was to work at big name companies within the consumer products space. Working at Apple, General Electric, etc was what excited me. Now, I have fulfilled my dream of working as a mechanical engineer on new products for consumers, but not for a flashy name and that's perfectly ok with me. Having seen how several other companies operated during internships, I have learned to place more value on other things. These include a company's investment in growing their employees, their recognition of skill sets that are not purely technical, and their supportiveness and teamwork in solving problems and overcoming challenges. Now, my aspiration is to climb to a leadership role within a company that is a good fit for me or to gain experience and apply it to grow the number of women in STEM.
What drew you to ZF? Why did you choose to apply? Near the end of high school, I became very busy applying for scholarships for college. The Zenie Foundation was recommended to my family and I by a friend and even from the application process alone, it became apparent that this was about more than just one-time financial support. It was not only a no-brainer to apply but to remain involved with ZF through college & post-college.
Do you have a favorite quote or saying? "She believed she could, so she did" ---R.S. Grey Athletics are a classic example: If I think "this weight feels heavy, I don't know if I can lift it", I likely won't. If I think "I believe I can" or concentrate on giving it my best effort, I likely will! The same is true in other short and long term tasks in life, hence why I had this quote on my graduation cap :) My mental state has a huge impact on my success rate so I do my best to build myself to a place of confidence or not overthink, just do!
What hobbies/interests do you have outside of work? Tell us about them! Why are they your passions and how did you get involved? My weekly fitness routine includes CrossFit, with semi regular pickleball and special occasion hiking, rock climbing, skiing, etc. During the school year I also part-time volunteer coach the hurdlers at a local college. My favorite way to describe this duo is "fitness for myself and for others!"
