What is something you love about your school? From the first moment I stepped onto Grounds, I knew that I wanted to go to UVA. The school is enriched with life and culture like no other, with their unique sayings (Wahoowa) and their outstanding academics and opportunities, UVA has grounded itself as a very unique institution.
What I love most about UVA is the opportunities for its students to take advantage of. There are hundreds of different clubs, secret societies, and degree track fraternities. As a student striving to go to law school, I plan to take advantage of the dozens of different clubs, from the Jefferson Debate Society to the Pre-Law fraternity. There are an endless abundance of opportunities at UVA for students to thrive, and I plan to take advantage of them all.
How/why did you choose your major? I am technically undecided right now, but I plan to major in Political Science and Computer Science. I have always been interested in electronics and technology, and when I took my first class of Computer Science in my junior year of high school, I realized two things: one, I was really good with computers, and two, I really enjoy coding. Political Science fell into the picture early in my life when I watched To Kill a Mockingbird. Watching Atticus Finch defend those who could not defend themselves made me want to help others. This drive for wanting to help the vulnerable lead me to interning at one of the top litigation firms in the state.
What is your relationship with your ZF coach like/In what ways have they helped you? Roy Chatterjee has been an amazing coach. He lives in Portland, Maine, a place that is very close to my heart. Ever since I was little, I have gone to Portland every summer. Besides our shared love for Maine, Roy has been extremely supportive throughout my financial aid process. He has listened and understood the difficulties along the way, and offered his help in any way he can. He also is very kind. During my interview for the foundation, we found a shared love for music. Roy, having been in a band before, and me, having grown up listening to house music. Roy has been an incredible coach and mentor, and has truly helped guide me throughout the blind journey of the college process.
Why did you apply to ZF/what drew you to this organization? My college counselor recommended the foundation to me. We have had previous alumni join the foundation, and it not only would help support me in my financial situation, but also offer a community of like minded people who want to make a change in our world. She told me that the guys who have been accepted love the community and the support that it offers, with a coach, mentors, and meetups. During my application process, I learned more about the foundation, how it pulls people from all over the country together. It is incredible how everyone is on different paths in their life, but the foundation brings them all together in order to support the next generation.
Tell us about some of your career aspirations. It’s totally ok if you aren’t sure yet! This can be as specific or as general as you want. I want to continue my education after undergraduate, into law school. It has been a dream of mine to become a lawyer. Currently this summer, I am interning at Kline & Specter, one of the top litigation firms in the state. I have been enjoying every second of it as I have gotten to get a first hand experience of the day to day legal process. So far, my goal after undergrad is to attend UVA’s law school, and spend another three years on Grounds at my second home.
